At the invitation of Rt. Hon. Bidya Devi Bhandari, President of Nepal  H.E. Maithripala Sirisena, President of Sri Lanka commenced his two day bilateral visit to Nepal with the conclusion of the 4th Summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 30th - 31st August 2018.
 
H.E. the president worshipped Maya Devi temple in Lumbini, birth place of Lord Buddha, on 1st September.  Hon. Mr. Rabindra Prasad Adhikari, Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation accorded a warm welcome to H.E. the President.  The President visited Sri Lanka Maha Viharaya and Dutugamunu Pilgrims Rest in Lumbini.
 
Rt. Hon. K.P. Sharma Oli, Prime Minister of Nepal paid a courtesy call on H.E. the President of  Sri Lanka and hailed the strong bonds of friendship forged through shared historical and cultural ties between the two countries.  The President requested Prime Minister’s invention to address the grievances of Sri Lankan Pilgrims in Lumbini.  The President extended an invitation to Prime Minister to visit Sri Lanka at a mutually convenient time which Prime Minister Oli gladly accepted.
 
The President had bilateral discussions with President of Nepal covering a wide range of issues including regional cooperation. The President of Nepal extended her best wishes to the President for his new appointment as the Chairman of the BIMSTEC.  She hosted a banquet in honour of President of Sri Lanka on 1st September.
 
The two leaders witnessed the exchange of MoU between the Institute of Foreign Affairs of Nepal and Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute of Sri Lanka and MoU on Cooperation for the Youth Development between the two countries.
 
The President participated at the inauguration ceremony of Trade and Investment Conference organized by the Institute for Strategic and Socio – Economic Research (ISSR) of Nepal on 31st August. While addressing Nepali businessmen, Hon. Vasantha Senanayake, State Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the importance of increasing bilateral trade volume between the two countries.
 
President Maithripala Sirisena visited Secretariat of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and Anandakuti Viharaya in Kathmandu which is reconstructed by the Sri Lankan government.  The President also paid homage to Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu. H.E. the President addressed the Sri Lankan community in Nepal on 2nd September.
