Deepawali “Festival of Lights” celebrated in Kathmandu

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kathmandu celebrated Deepawali on 25th October 2019 with the participation of Sri Lankans residing in Kathmandu representing Hindu as well as Buddhist, Christian, Muslim faiths and well-wishers.

The event commenced with a special pooja and blessings invoked by Rev. Pandith Hem Sharma. Addressing the gathering, Rev. Sharma appreciated the Embassy’s initiative in organizing the event to celebrate an important Hindu cultural festival.

Welcoming the guests, Ambassador-designate Himalee Arunatilaka highlighted the significance of Deepawali and said that the festival of lights has a deeper spiritual meaning, signifying the awareness of one's Inner light, which has the power to dispel the shadows of darkness and give new hope. She also observed that Deepawali is a festival which reflects the rich Tamil and Hindu heritage in Sri Lanka and its celebration is a symbol of peace, harmony and hope.

Members of the Staff Mrs. Geeta Kugadasan and Mr. Dilli Sharma highlighted the distinct cultural norms of celebrating the festival in Sri Lanka and Nepal, respectively. The celebrations also included a Traditional Nepali dance, performed by Nepali dancers and traditional sweets served at the end.

The Embassy premises were decorated with colourful rangoli designs, traditional oil lamps and illuminations.
