70thAnniversary of National Independence Day of Sri Lanka Celebrated in Nepal

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Nepal celebrated the 70th Anniversary of the National Independence Day of Sri Lanka on 04th February 2018 at the Embassy Premises.

The programme commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by the Ambassador, SwarnaPerera in the presence of members of Sri Lankan community and well-wishers. Thereafter the National Anthem was sung in Sinhala and Tamil Languages. A two-minute silence was observed in honour of all the National heroes who had sacrificed their lives for the motherland, followed by lighting of the ceremonial oil lamp.

Multi-religious observances were conducted by four religious dignitaries representing Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Islamic faiths. The National Day messages of His Excellency, the President, Hon.Prime Minister and Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs was read in Sinhala, Tamil & English Languages.

Addressing the gatheringAmbassadorSwarnaPerera highlighted the importance of the event and the relations between Sri Lanka and Nepal and the latest political developments in Sri Lanka. At the end of the event traditional Sri Lankan food was served to the guests.

Almsgiving (Dhana) was also organized at the Official Residence on 4th February and 20 members of Mahasanga were present at the event.

A Reception was also organized at the Hotel Radission, Kathmandu on 5th February to mark the occasion and Rt. Hon. Nanda Bahadur Pun, Vice-President of Nepal graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Over 300 guests, including politicians, Foreign Secretary, Senior Government Officials, Members of Diplomatic Corps., Representatives of International Organisations, Business Entrepreneurs, Journalists and members of the Sri Lankan Community were present at the Reception.

Speaking on the occasion, the Ambassador apprised the relations between Sri Lanka and Nepal and the significant political developments that have taken place in Sri Lanka under the leadership of H.E. the President and Hon. Prime Minister.

The Dinner was served to the well-wishers which included delicious Sri Lankan cuisine.
